CicLAvia is a non-profit organization that has created  a fun and healthy way to connect with the Los Angeles community providing a safe space for locals to bike, skate, rollerblade and dance through the city.

CicLAvia has opened streets throughout the San Fernando Valley, Culver City, Venice, Mar Vista, Wilshire Blvd., Koreatown, MacArthur Park, South LA, Echo Park, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Boyle Heights, Historic Downtown, East LA, Pasadena, Pacoima, Arleta, Panorama City, and Southeast Cities. Their goal is to address active transportation, urban land use and public health needs in Los Angeles. Being the largest open street events in the United States, CicLAvia’s free for all events have impacted local and regional transportation policy relating to pedestrians and bikes!

Highland Park Bowl

Known as Los Angeles’ oldest bowling alley, Highland Park bowl was established in 1927 in the midst of the prohibition era. The building originally consisted of a doctor’s offices, pharmacy, a music store, and recreational space.

During this time, patrons would obtain a legal prescription for medicinal whiskey on the second floor and then head down downstairs to have their prescriptions filled which allowed for legal “boozing” while bowling. It wasn’t until 1933 that the music store was approved for a live music permit which paved the way for the establishments modern day culture.

Today, Highland Park Bowl is known as a trendy antique filled spot with live music, craft cocktails, and food! According to LA Weekly, the bowling alley serves some of the best Pizza in Los Angeles! “top-shelf Southern Italian pizza is being crafted in the kitchen by Italian-born master pizzaiolo, Marco Aromatario”.

Melrose Hill- Small Town Feel in the Heart of the Big City

Tucked away in the Hollywood Studio District, north of Melrose Avenue between Little Armenia and Korea-town, is the historic quaint neighborhood of 45 residences called “Melrose Hill”.  This HPOZ area illustrates why Los Angeles is known as “The bungalow capital of the world”, since it is notable for its numerous examples of Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles built between 1911 and 1926.

Originally developed as affordable housing by the Briggs Company, this tiny enclave is a great area for first time home buyers, even though prices have increased a bit since then.  In January 2003, Los Angeles magazine deemed it one of the city’s “10 Great Neighborhoods”, due to this gem of a community being what residents call “a step back in time”.  Melrose Hill is a charming place where neighbors know each other, watch after each other’s kids and play in the two cul-de-sacs and one tiny street.  If you want your anonymity, this is the wrong place, but its appeal is apparent, since houses come up for sale on average, every 1.5 years.  Home-owners love the isolation Melrose Hill provides, but say visitors often have a hard time finding them and so does “Waze”.

Though it may be hard to find, the location can’t be any sweeter.  It is centrally located near the 101 Freeway (Hollywood Freeway) so the commute is easier and everything you need is conveniently a short ride away.  This historical oasis is also close to many great schools like the King Middle School, Ramona Elementary School and John Marshall High School.
